dear me...
we should all take another look at country home magazine.
get yourself over to alaska, long beach and look at hayley's scans.
so perfect. wow.

oddly, i was recently thinking the same thing about hope atherton.
i sort of love her style.
i wouldn't necessarily wear everything that she does,
but i like that she's her own person.
her art is pretty interesting too.

also, go take a look at the work of virginia johnson.
(i found the three links at the top very inspiring)

i love the green market. especially in the fall. we go pretty much every saturday, year round, with few exceptions. this weekend it was especially nice - winter banana apples (and mutsu and honey crisp and little lady apples and...), leeks, fresh bread, organic milk, sweet cream butter, cranberry beans, seckel pears...its all good. i just can't seem to get enough of it. horse chestnuts on the ground, crisp mornings, turning leaves everywhere - it is the best time of year!

also, i got this book in the mail and its sort of wonderful.
when our sick scanner feels better, i'll post some pictures.

hello everyone!

as most of you know, i adore utilitarian objects that also happen to be beautiful objects. the perfect meeting of form and function, but also with simplicity.

since i completely forgot to celebrate this site's anniversary last month (eek!), i thought it might be great fun to host a swap. so please join me in a little postal exchange that i'll be calling...

beautiful use

in this swap, you'll be asked to send any three objects that are at once utilitarian, simple and beautiful to your partner. think about the beauty in the everyday...a packet of perfect new pencils, a white enamel bowl, handmade beeswax candles, a natural canvas tote with red stitching... these objects can be new, thrifted, vintage, handmade...just keep in mind that its probably best to send something that you'd be pleased to receive yourself.

if you'd like to participate, please e-mail the following to me (by october 16, 2006) at beautiful_use(at)yahoo(dot)com:

+ your name
+ email address
+ mailing address
+ website
+ a little something about yourself
(do you collect? do you craft? your favorite color? describe your style.)

also, let me know if you are willing to ship your swap internationally.

a couple more things:
because i've never hosted a swap before, i'd like to limit this one to 25 people. also, you must have a blog or a flickr account to which you regularly post to participate. after october 16, i'll let you know who your partner is. i promise not to give away your contact information to anyone else.

the mailing date for this swap is november 7, 2006.

a great new bag from mono
(the thread obi belt is also quite nice)

and yes, comments have been turned off.
there are many reasons for this, and here are some of them:

+ i much prefer to respond to e-mail.
+ i find monitoring comments sort of tedious and time-consuming.
(the monitoring, not the reading of the comments)
+ anonymous commenters give me the creeps
(oddly, anonymous readers do not).

i feel very strongly that this little place i've created for myself should remain a kind of log/scrapbook/inspiration board full of the things that excite, inspire, intrigue and engage me. i don't really feel like this is a place for criticism. its just a place for what i like/love/enjoy/what makes me happy. i feel very strongly that this place is for my own use first (selfish me, yes) and if other people enjoy reading here, they are very welcome to and that is a lovely added bonus (but a bonus, not a goal).

did i mention, i still love getting e-mail? because i really really do.

if you haven't seen science of sleep by michel gondry...you must.
i did last night.
it was romantic and magical and sort of perfect.

i hope you are having a beautiful weekend.

...brendan monroe (good call mav!) and also, zachary rossman (makes my head feel funny. yes that's good.)

oh passenger pigeon...
(one of the many good things available here)

i'm a model.

(okay, well, sort of...)
a while back, i was overjoyed in being asked by my friend lotta jansdotter to be photographed for her new book. how cool is that? i still can't believe it, but last weekend i found myself sitting at the victory in brooklyn, trying not to look like i really had no idea what i was doing. i'm not sure if i succeeded, but it sure was a lot of fun. i got to model a really cool fabric necklace that lotta made.

lotta's new book is about sewing and it will be published in japan and in the usa in the spring of next year. it looks like it will be a super book, full of beautiful design and craft ideas. i just can't wait to see it. i really love her other two books - if you don't have them yet, go get them here.

oh and also...
two new shops...

+ grace over at design*sponge has a wonderful new shop full of limited editions by some my favorite people. go take a look!

+ the super ladies of brooklyn's sodafine have a new on-line shop.
good stuff!
