i'm a texan.

its a part of me that, until recently, i tried not to own. i wasn't born there, but i spent nearly all of my childhood and adolescence there. it has a huge impact on how i think about things, see things, experience things. that's something that i'm starting to learn...and gently begining to embrace.

i can't stop thinking about the beauty of tumbleweeds and wide open space. like this wonderful photograph by allison v. smith. i'm planning a visit to marfa, texas this summer. her series on that city lives in my skin today.

...and on a completely unrelated note...
everyone should check out the ott shop.

a new artist to obsess about over on etsy.

my favorite graffiti artist pops up again and this time i catch it with my camera.

last night, my boyfriend and i went so see transamerica, which was enjoyable, but a little stiff and capped off with a very lackluster ending. the very best parts of the evening were a quick stop before the film for cream puffs at beard papa's and the joy in being treated to a preview of matthew barney's drawing restraint 9 (i can hardly stand the wait).

i'm looking for phones that are off the hook...

isn't this a gorgeous piece by marcel wanders?
i want one.
his sponge vase and concrete bowl are nice too.

i'm a fan of the men's line cloak, so i was particularly excited to see this new women's line harald, designed by the co-designer of cloak, robert geller.

the jewelry from antwerp-based duo, wouters & hendrix is a bit like a dream. katrin wouters & karen hendrix met in 1984 while studying at the royal academy of fine arts and have been collaborating on extraordinary, intelligent fine jewelry ever since. every season they surprise me.

i've been patiently awaiting the 2006 fall collection from maria cornejo...
and here are my some of my favorite looks. see more here.

i also was taken by these two looks by ports 1961 and this perfect trench by three as four...

*sunday addendum: speaking of as four, i happened to see ange and gabi at last night's performance of abacus black strikes now!: the rampant justice of abacus black (yes, that's really the title) by ntusa at ps 122.
it was the coolest thing that happened all week.

the fabulous lena corwin has updated her website.

i am seriously over the moon that artist pierre huyghe will be presenting a special project in collaboration with the public art fund in the 2006 whitney biennial. i first saw his work in 2003 at the guggenheim when he won the 2002 hugo boss prize and was completely absorbed by his film installation, les grands ensembles (pictured above). his work is mysterious, thoughtful...like a waking dream. be sure to catch it if you happen to be in nyc this fall.

accidental interview #1
...a periodic presentation from hoping for happy accidents

claudia wu is the editor of me magazine, a unique, new york-based quarterly magazine that traces out the lives of creative people. for each issue, claudia chooses a guest editor and collects interviews and photographs of that person's closest friends, creating a document of that person's life. each issue ends with an in depth interview with the guest editor.

where were you born?
toronto

where were you educated?
RISD

when and how did you come up with the idea for me magazine?
when: in a car driving home from hunter mountain, february 2004
how: talking about a way of doing something more fulfilling than my
regular job. i had worked at many magazines, so it seemed to be the
logical next step to do my own.

did you always want to be a magazine editor?
i wanted to be a surgeon, musician, biologist, pastry chef, artist,
film director, psychologist, fashion designer, zookeeper... the list
goes on. i still want to be many of those things.

happiness is...…

+ alexander mcqueen
+ michel gondry
+ wong kar wai
+ alan ball

+ end to violence and corruption
+ end to exploitation of people, natural resources, habitats, and animals
+ a cure for cancer and AIDS

escaping with...…
+ us weekly
+ cnn
+ new york times
+ gawker
+ curbed
...i also have a pile of books i've bought but haven't gotten around to
reading.

morning...
sleep in

noon...
eat lunch

night...

what are you looking forward to?
+ time off
+ watching tennis and lost
+ new york fashion week
+ working with the next guest editor
+ doing freelance projects from home in my pjs
+ figuring out my life
+ learning more about the world
+ the future

the future is...
relentless, hazy, full of promise.

the past is...
the past.

your happiest accident...
all of them, good and bad. they've made me who i am today. it's also
nice to find money in places i've forgotten about.
